MAYFIELD, Ky. - The story of the 2013 season for the Mid-Continent University volleyball team has been the outstanding play of their freshmen. The Cougars played eight freshmen through the course of the season, and now that the regular season has come to a close, three of those freshmen have been honored by the American Midwest Conference.
Khristina Schellentrager earned AMC Freshman of the Year honors as well as a place on the AMC's All-Conference Second Team. Also honored were Lauren Burt and Olivia Hoelker, who each achieved honorable mention All-AMC status as well. Schellentrager, a 5'10" outside-hitter from Cathey's Valley, Calif., was selected as the best freshman in the AMC by a vote of the coaches in the league. She was one of only two freshmen in the AMC to exceed 300 kills on the season - teammateOlivia Hoelker was the other - and one of only 11 players overall in the Conference to accomplish that feat. In addition, she was one of 11 players in the AMC to have over 300 digs - and Schellentrager was the only player in the AMC to have at least 300 in both categories.
Burt ranked fifth in the AMC in total assists, and she was one of only two players ranked in the top-10 in assists to play in fewer than 100 sets on the season. Hoelker's 57 service aces currently ranks her second among AMC players, just five off the lead in the Conference.
"It is an incredible honor to come into a new conference - especially one of the AMC's caliber - and have three of our athletes honored at the Conference level," coach Lindsey Davis noted after the release of the teams. "These ladies have worked incredibly hard this year, and to be recognized by others is a true testament to God being at work within each of them and this program. We are so blessed to have such wonderful ladies in this program, and I thank God for leading them to our great University and into my life."
