Mid-Continent is Lighting It Up Blue Throughout April

Each year, Autism Speaks promotes a worldwide event on April 2nd called “Light it Up Blue.”  The motto of this event is “Shine a Light on Autism”. For the second year in a row, Mid-Continent University is “lighting it up blue” throughout April.

Matt Harmon, Manager of Design and Content in MCU’s IT Department, said, “My wife and I are so thankful to see the university supporting autism awareness month again this year. Not only has given us an appropriate venue to share some of the challenges and experiences we’ve had in raising a child with autism, it has allowed us to directly participate in the greater task of raising global awareness of the disorder. This kind of a shared participation is truly a blessing, and we’re so appreciative for all of the love and support that’s been given to us along the way.”

Through Mid-Continent’s support of autism awareness, MCU is specifically supporting an organization called Autism Speaks (www.autismspeaks.org). According to their website, the organization was founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with Autism. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism now affects one in 88 American children and one in 54 boys. Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls tohave autism. It is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average.
